ABOUT SE SCHEIBEL

My Name is Samuel E Scheibel. I am an artist depicting the natural world and wildlife, mostly birds, primarily through watercolor and gouache.

I grew up on the south shore of Long Island in New York surrounded by extensive woodland, rivers, a bay, barrier and island and the ocean. My interest in the natural world was furthered by family and friends working in conservation, many of whom are prolific birders. One family acquaintance was a celebrated conservationist and watercolor artist, Dennis Puleston. I was fortunate enough to know Dennis but sadly not old or wise enough to seek his tutelage while he was still working.

I studied architecture and became licensed in 2014. The lateral thinking required by a designer is reflected in the elements of my paintings by deliberately impossible or exaggerated scenes. Working through iteration, I strive for vibrancy and impressions of the subject which allow the viewer to apply their own layer of experience. The resulting piece is often much different than the initial concept sketch. Finished paintings are of subjects I’ve personally directly observed. I hope to provoke questions and interest in the natural world leading to further engagement and conservation.

I’ve lived in New Zealand where I was fortunate to have some experience as a wildlife guide. I now reside in the northwest corner of Essex in the UK with a different set of flora and fauna to discover. I travel to bird and see new habitats when possible.
